Geophone Cases

Geo Space offers a variety of land and marsh
cases to suit each customer's individual applications. They are constructed
from a glass reinforced, thermoplastic resin that provides exceptional
resistance to extreme environmental conditions, with high impact resistance
even at very low temperatures. Standard case colors are blue and yellow. Each
case fits a wide selection of interchangeable spikes and bases, and can be
easily assembled and disassembled in the field without special
tools.
The PC-901 Marsh Case requires no potting
compound. It has an elegantly simple construction, with very few parts and no
threaded pieces. It utilizes the patented PCB Anchor* for reliable connection
of pigtails to the geophone, with the damping resistor mounted directly on the
clad of the PCB Anchor for easy replacement of either the geophone or the
resistor. The unique LIM silicone rubber case seal, which retains its
flexibility to -50° F, prevents water from penetrating to the basic
unit.
The PC-801-LP and PC-801-LPC Land Cases also
require no potting compound. The patented PCB Anchor Takeout anchors the leader
cable and provides reliable electrical interconnections. It is housed in the
LIM silicone rubber case seal in such a manner that even if water, due to
wicking from a cut in the leader wire jacket, enters the top cavity of the
geophone case, it cannot penetrate to or corrode the basic unit. The large
radius cable entry of the case seal reduces cable fatigue for improved field
life. The PC-801-LP has a steel base cup with stud, while the PC-801-LPC has a
traditional base.
The PC-21 Land Case
is designed to handle Geo Space's larger geophone units, with a knot anchored
takeout used for extra cable security. This case has been successfully used in
a wide variety of field environments throughout the world.

The Geo Space GS-3C Waterproof Land Case orients three geophones
in the standard V/H1/H2 configuration for three component recording. The
geophones are secured in specially designed retainer cavities that are built
into the case. The axis of each geophone is clearly indicated on the case top,
which also houses a large, easy-to-read level bubble. The case bottom
accommodates up to 4 spikes for maximum stability when planted, or can be
fitted with an arctic base.
The GS-3C Land
Case is well suited for both 3-D and 4-D applications. It is constructed from
strong thermoplastic resins that maintain long term integrity even in the
harshest of environments. The patented PCB Anchor/Takeout accepts up to
9-conductor leader and provides reliable electrical contact and strong cable
anchoring. The molded silicone-rubber case seal prevents any water penetration
and eliminates the need for internal potting. |

Even under the best field conditions, the use
of geophone strings invariably leads to cuts and breaks in the leader cable,
making leader repair a necessary part of normal field crew operations.
Solutions to this repair problem include soldering the conductors together then
covering the jacket either with tape or with a conventional hard plastic splice
that has to be filled with a potting compound for sealing. Neither of these
techniques is a satisfactory solution to the leader repair problem. Some crews
replace sections of the geophone leader as being the only way to make
dependable repair. The MS-4 molded slip-on splice is an inexpensive and easy
solution to your leader cable repair problem.
The MS-4 molded slip-on waterproof splice is the result of Geo
Space's continuing search for applications using the molded silicone-rubber
covers or boots and PC boards. The electrical connections are made by soldering
the conductors to the PC board. This soldering technique serves a dual
function: the electrical design for the PC board assures that correct
electrical inner connections are made between the conductors, and the high
strength of the PC board provides an anchor that is equal to the breaking
strength of the leader cable. The molded silicon-rubber slip-on boot tightly
seals all points of the leader cable entry and provides a water seal around the
PC board and solder contacts.
Using the PC board
for connecting geophones into strings is a Geo Space patented technique (U.S.A.
patent number 4,594,698) used in all the Geo Space geophone string assemblies,
as well as the use of a molded silicone-rubber seal around the geophone leader
cable. Therefore the technology used in the MS-4 molded slip-on waterproof
splice is not new, but an extension of a field proven idea that originated with
Geo Space. The MS-4 is available for all commonly used sizes and types of
leader cable. The PC board can accept either 2, 3, 4, or 6 conductor cable. The
slip-on boot has cable entry for .180 to .500 inch diameter cable.
